Creative editing Vocal Samples in Ableton and Logic

Ableton Live Example: Vocal Chop and Rearrange
Import the Vocal:
- Drag your vocal sample into an audio track.
Slice to MIDI:
- Right-click the vocal and select "Slice to New MIDI Track."
- Choose Transients as the slicing method for rhythmic cuts.
Rearrange in MIDI:
- Rearrange the vocal slices on the MIDI grid to create a new vocal pattern.
- Try creating a repeating hook by placing slices on every beat or experiment with off-beat placements for a more dynamic feel.
Add Effects:
- Apply reverb, delay, or pitch shift to the individual slices for a fresh, atmospheric effect.
- Use the LFO or automation for variation throughout the track.

Logic Pro X Example: Vocal Time-Stretch and Reverse
Import the Vocal:
- Drag the vocal sample into an audio track.
Enable Flex Time:
- Activate Flex Mode and select Flex Time - Polyphonic to maintain vocal quality.
- Stretch or compress the vocal to fit your track’s timing, while preserving the pitch.
Reverse the Vocal:
- Select the vocal region, go to Functions and choose Reverse.
- The reversed vocal creates a swooping effect, perfect for transitions or build-ups.
Layer with Effects:
- Layer the reversed vocal with delay or reverb to add space and texture.
- Add subtle pitch shifting or automation to create a sense of movement.
By manipulating a vocal sound using these techniques, you can turn a simple vocal sample into a rhythmic element or atmospheric effect that adds depth and creativity to your track.
